Algae Identification: Green Filamentous Algae vs. Cyanobacteria

Recently, we received some intriguing photos of "Green Filamentous Algae" from a resident of Mica Point.

These photos were initially considered milfoil, a common aquatic plant, or potentially dangerous cyanobacteria. However, after submitting the images to the DES Cyanobacteria web page, a biologist confirmed that they depict Green Filamentous Algae, which is not harmful like cyanobacteria.

Green Filamentous Algae often resembles plants with its stringy, thread-like appearance, and it can sometimes have visible bubbles. This is a key difference from cyanobacteria, which typically does not present in this plant-like form.

This helpful information ensures that if you encounter this type of algae, you can recognize it as non-threatening. Stay tuned for more updates and information about our lake!
