Milfoil & Lake Hosting Standings

In early May, Amy Smagula and her team from the NH-DES did a survey of Swains Lake and at that time, did not find milfoil growth.

But, before we rest easy, we need to remember that the same thing happened last year. They found nothing in May, but during their August survey found a large patch to the left of the boat launch that had to be treated. We also paid divers to come and remove a few plants in other locations. The total cost was $16,000. Although this was nowhere near the $67,000 the state of NH spent in 2023 to do our large, first time treatment, it is still significant, considering we now need to pay bills ourselves with only a small amount of help from State grants. And we need to pay the whole bill, prior to receiving any grant money back.

In the next few weeks, you may see a Swains Lake Association area representative making rounds, sharing information, and asking that dues be paid early in the season, rather than waiting until the annual meeting that occurs in August. This way, if our weed watchers spot some growth and we have to notify either the divers to come and pull a small amount, or Solitude Lake Management to chemically treat a new, or stubborn, patch, we will have the funds immediately available to do so. Dues are $25/year and can be sent to PO Box 2, Barrington, NH 03825. You are also able to donate electronically. If this method is chosen, please know dues will be $30. Since we are not considered a non-profit by Uncle Sam, and are charged accordingly. Please note that although Dues are $25, you are welcome to donate what you can over and above that in order to help us pay for the Milfoil treatments.

We still have the paid Lake Host Program on hold, because funds to match the grant needed are short. However, there are a few volunteers this year you may see occasionally. If you wish to volunteer, text Wendi Tremblay at 603-767-2543, and she can get you set up.
