We have received our grant from New Hampshire Lakes Association for our 2019 Lake Host Program here at Swains. We are hoping for a good mix of paid and volunteer Lake Hosts at our launch this season. While it is a bit easier to get paid Hosts, our volunteers are extremely important too.
The money usually runs out around Labor Day, and unless we have a decent number of volunteers to fill in on sunny, early fall weekends, the launch goes uncovered these times. Given the high number of water bodies in our area that have milfoil and other exotic weeds, we would rather keep our launch covered during those warm September weekends. New Hampshire state law prohibits a Lake Host from receiving pay during the summer, and then transitioning to a volunteer in the autumn. So those volunteers are an important backbone of the Lake Host Program here at Swains.
Nearby lakes and streams affected by exotic weeds are:
Northwood Lake (Milfoil),
Pawtuckaway Lake (Milfoil),
All lakes in Barnstead (Milfoil),
Salmon Falls River, (Milfoil).
The hour-long training session is going on now. Those interested in both paid and volunteer positions can contact Cindi Harrington at: (603) 988-6051, or email her at: charrin0@yahoo.com (That’s a “zero” not an upper case O).
